Vaughn Vs. Clearwater
Summary
Fire Medic Vaughn is a 23 year member of the Clearwater Fire Department, garnering much recognition for his professionalism and service beyond the call of duty.
An equipment malfunction on an emergency run led to an investigation and subsequent illegal firing of Vaughn. The equipment at hand was known to be under a nationwide recall. In addition, The City of Clearwater denied Vaughn his right to due process and removed him from his shift schedule by Fire Chief Geer. This action knowingly affected Vaughn's ability to care for his critically ill son, both financially and physically.
Verdict
The City of Clearwater was found in violation of Fire Medic Vaughn's rights and ordered to reinstate Vaughn, reimburse back pay and benefits for the period he was off, and cover legal expenses for all parties negatively affected.
Total Cost to the Clearwater Tax Payer: $86,430.93*
*These costs do not include additional fees billed to the city by their attorneys Thompson, Sizemore, and Gonzalez.
